Butoh is an image-based movement exploration.
It asks what can a body do and what is a body?
It draws us to the question of who we really are?
Each class will begin with a Noguchi gymnastic-based mind-body workout,
followed by image explorations, breathing energy exercises, and then
choreographic structures. The 10 weeks will culminate in a student recital.

BUTOH WAS FOUNDED by

a Japanese choreographer,
Tatsumi Hijikata in late 50's.
He was inspired by surrealism and
modern writers such as Jean Genet,
Marquis de Sade and Yukio Mishima.
Hijikata used the term "Ankoku-Butoh"
(dance of darkness) to describe his dance.
He delved into the grotesque, darkness,
and decay to catch a glimpse of the truth
of life on the stage.
His last words were,

"There is the brightest world like a musical theater beyond this darkness".
Mariko Reynolds believes that this brightness is the core of Butoh and is following his intention
to extend and share this light of dance.

Thought of Butoh

A dance and music as the sculpture of consciousness.

Becoming / Discovering personality through sound and movement. Consciouness is forming mood and body and that is depending on inspiration. Changing the situation of conciousness brings variations to mind, personarity, and environment. This consciousness is the essence for humanity. Essence is creativity, pure, love, and the infinite energy.
